Vietnam and Cambodia
7-Oct-2008
After visiting Vang Vieng and Vientiane, in Laos, the three of us had to say goodbye to our travel group. From Vientiane (the capital of Laos) we caught a long, bumpy bus ride to Hue, Vietnam. We spend only a few hours in Hue before getting on another bus to Hoi An, Vietnam. Hoi An was a very charming, old fashioned city with a lot to see and do. We walked along the river in the old town, took a boat ride, and got tailor made clothes (a specialty there). We celebrated TJ's birthday with dinner and drinks, of course.
After Hoi An, we bussed to Nha Trang for the day, where we spent time on the beach, enjoying the sunshine. That night, we bussed down to Saigon, where we have been for the last couple of days. In Saigon, we saw the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, and the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was really interesting to see the Vietnamese perspective on the Vietnam War, and we began to question what little we were taught about the war.
We have just arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Today, so far, we have explored the city and markets on foot, and have seen the Genocide Museum, which used to house the prison called S-21. It was fascinating and devastating to learn about the Khmer Rouge that happened here about 25 years ago, since we are still seeing and feeling the effects on the country.
After a couple long, emotional days, we are excited to head to Siem Reap and visit the famous Angkor Wat!
