Tanith Sexton's Journal
goodbye Uganda
30-Sep-2008
I fly out tomorrow but I would like to leave you all with one final journal! Here is a list of things that you should really think about and be thankful for!
1. having faucets and then being able to turn them on without wondering if water will come out.
2. turning on a light switch without wondering if there is power.
3. the variety of food available in a grocery store.
4. the saying, "I have no idea what to make for dinner." because at least we have enough variety and money for that to even be a question in our daily lives.
5. paved roads-even ones with potholes.
6. your education, even with finals and boring lectures!
7. your job, even though it can be horrible at least we have the opportunity to go to work and make money!
8. the privilege to get fat! We may not want to gain weight but once again we are lucky to have to worry about gaining weight because we have food, money, and the life style to!
9. washing machines and driers because even though doing laundry is a pain doing laundry by hand is much harder then switching over a load!
Also, when you get worried or upset about something, stop and really think about it in the grand scheme of things! About 90% of the time it is something so trivial that you will forget about it by the end of the day! Our lives are too pampered compared to many others around the world! On the other hand stop and be thankful for those days without worry because here people don't get them!
I used to not like to say that I was from America but I now realize that I should be. I am able to get a good education and I am able to travel around the world to see the lives of others! I am also privileged enough to see how crappy somethings are in America but I also am educated enough to make steps to change them! Unfortunately, for some of Uganda's youth they will never get the chance to see how things can be better and they will never get the chance to change it either! It is a cycle that needs to be stopped but no one can find the start to stop it!
Uganda has shown me her colors. Some are beautiful and some are not but somehow they all mix together to create a unique, special, and wonderful place!
