TIA... this is africa!

so here i sit in an internet cafe in kampala. i have sixteen minutes to catch everyone up on what i'm doing here... although i'll get more time once i'm in mukono. i promise i'll write more when i get a little bit of time to inform you of how my trip went and all that.
the important thing is that i arrived safely, got to sophie's motel in entebbe, and spent the night in the good company of some friends from cedar creek, who just left this morning. i got about five hours of GOOD sleep in a comfortable bed, and although my jet lag is taking hold of me and i have no idea what day it is, i feel much more sane than i did last night after being awake for about 40 hours. i took the last hot shower i'll be taking for a month, ate breakfast, drank the best coffee i've ever had, and had a good conversation with a man who works at the hotel, then was collected by leslie.
i met another volunteer from the u.k. named richard who will be based out of mukono, and we began our journey to kampala. the roads were scary with tons of traffic in the city... i'm not used to sitting on the left side of the car and having the driver's side on the right so it was really strange. the way people drive is completely insane.
the countryside is BEAUTIFUL... i watched the sun rise this morning because i woke up at around 6 am to say goodbye to everyone from cedar creek. i had an amazing view from a terrace type thing they had at the hotel... which was really nice by the way... lake victoria was right there. last night the moon was glorious; i felt as if i could reach out and grab it with my fingers.
the drive to kampala wasn't only slightly harrowing... i got the chance to listen to leslie give us an intro to ugandan culture and customs, which was enlightening, and i also saw the market and many other spots as we wended our way into town... lots of shops, schools, homes, etc. and there are animals all over the place... dogs sleeping at the side of the road, cows ambling around, chickens everywhere, goats...
leslie is great and she says that there are about 25 volunteers this summer. can't wait to meet them all.
sorry that this is somewhat brief, but i'll be back with an update soon!
i am just so glad that i am here...
much love to you all.
shanti.
