About Volunteer Journals
These journals are written by volunteers of the Global Volunteer Network who are volunteering in one of our many volunteer programs. This site serves a few purposes, perhaps the most important being it enables our volunteers to communicate effectively and easily with family and friends back home; a great alternative from group emails. Through these journal entries prospective volunteers are able to grasp an idea of what their volunteer experience maybe like, although, without fail, every volunteer experience is unique.
About the Global Volunteer Network
The Global Volunteer Network (GVN: http://www.volunteer.org.nz) was launched in December 2000 by Colin Salisbury, its Founder and Executive Director, after spending time volunteering in Ghana, West Africa. GVN launched with three programs (Nepal, Ghana and Ecuador), and currently provides volunteer programs through our partner organizations in Alaska, Cambodia, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, India, Kenya, Nepal, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Romania, South Africa, South Dakota, Tanzania, Thailand, Uganda, and Vietnam. The network continues to expand with new programs currently being researched and assessed. The number of people volunteering through GVN also continues to grow. In 2002 we placed 240 volunteers, and in 2007 we placed almost 2000 volunteers. Our goal for 2008 is to place 2500 volunteers. At GVN we align with the idea of 'local solutions to local problems', so we work with local community organisations in each country. We believe that local communities are in the best position to determine their needs, and we provide volunteers to help them achieve their goals. As a volunteer you can expect support from GVN to assist you in your volunteering experience; Volunteer Journals is one example of our service to you.
